Youth Leagues PDF Print E-mail

We offer two locations for our youth program—our East Field at Our Lady of Hope Church in Sterling and our West Field at Morven Park in Leesburg. Teams have all practices and play most games on their home field, with  2-3 "away" games played at the opposite location.  Games are played 7v7 and are reffed.

Our youth field hockey program is for girls in 3rd grade* through 12th grade.  We have four age divisions: 3/4 grade, 5/6 grade, 7/8 grade, and 9-12 grade.  With our experienced coaching staff, our players learn the fundamentals of the sport via practices, scrimmages, and games. Our spring season ends with an end of season Fun Fest event and in the fall players participate in the Oakton Playday (3-8 graders only).

Each season includes weeknight practices (1x a week per team, 1.5 hours each) with games on Saturday mornings. We include additional pre-season clinics for new players, to get a head start on learning the sport.

As our membership grows, we will offer divisions for new and experienced players and create a competitive travel league as well as attend at least one competitive tournament per season.

* Girls must be at least 8 years old AND in 3rd grade to begin with LFHA.

Interleague Play

Players who are interested and in grades 3-8 may play in the Oakton Playday in late October, where six or more leagues join for a fun field hockey event. We have participated in a Fairfax friendly tourneys, invited outside teams in the high school age group to play with us, and we will continue to create and seek out other opportunities for our members to play against teams outside our league.

Community Service

We encourage our members to  partipate in community service projects and the league facilitates one per season that players may join with the fellow teammates. In past these have included helping our west field host, the Worship Center, in dyeing eggs for their Easter Egg Hunt, and stuffing race bags for the Cascades 10K benefiting the Sterling Fire Department. We are open to suggestions, so if you are a member of our league and would like to offer the next idea for our service project, please This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Required Equipment

Field hockey shin guards, mouth guards, and sticks are required at all times (practices and games). LFHA jerseys and kilts are our mandatory youth league uniform and need to be worn during all games and/or tournaments.

Important equipment notes:

  • Mouth guards should be colored (not clear) and should not have any tabs or other protrusions on the front of the mouth guard.
  • Shin guards should be field hockey specific.  Other shin guards designed for other sports such as for soccer are not acceptable as they do not offer sufficient protection.
  • East youth teams must wear red shin guards or red socks and any clothing under the jersey must be white.
  • West youth teams must wear white shin guards or white socks and any clothing under the jersey must be black.
  • For games where both teams have same color shin guard, one team will wear black socks over the shin guards to further distiguish the teams.
  • All players must have their own hockey balls which they must bring to practice every week.
